Iíve just heard on Radio 5 the chilling words "Leveson-compliant".
Lord Leveson is not a prophet. He is a judge. He was asked for his opinion. He has produced a report of 2,000 or so pages which no one has had time to read and digest properly.
Does Ed Miliband think it right to accept in full recommendations he hasnít had time to do more than skim, and that he and his colleagues havenít yet thought through or discussed properly? In recent times, by calling for judge-led inquiries into all contentious issues, Labour has shown it has no faith in Parliament and is happy to have public policy dictated by unaccountable judges.
Yet politicians complain that the will of Parliament and the people is being eroded by domestic and foreign judges ambitious to expand their power.
The media have cut politicians down to size, sometime unfairly. Now some politicians seek vengefully to control the media rather than administer well-deserved kicks. Who will take on the over-mighty legal profession?
